INTRODUCTION

Maria Montessori's Magical Discovery

After discovering that the young child's mind from birth to six years of age is like an absorbent sponge, Dr. Maria Montessori set about creating a "special" environment where the child could learn, develop, and flourish. The Directress is the dynamic link between the child and the environment. The response of the children within this ideal environment is amazing -  almost magical - worthy of our respect and living up to high ideals. Within this environment, the children show us that purposeful activities are preferably to "play" and that they have an innate love of order and thrive in their freedom to choose and to work independently.

An Introduction to the Montessori Classroom

We highly recommend a tour of the facilities. This tour will be done without your child to introduce you to the Montessori experience and view the facilities at your leisure. At this time any questions will be answered, and you can pick up an enrollment form as well. A second visit may be scheduled during or after school hours to which your child will get a hands on experience of their new school, and to meet the teacher.

Our Classroom

Little Star Montessori is situated in Suites 100 & 101 1260 Lynn Valley Road. We have two spacious, bright, beautiful classrooms for our preschool area combined with colour, warmth and beauty. Our kindergarten rooms join the preschool rooms and are also beautifully decorated to enhance the children’s first years of learning and growing.

Little Star Montessori’s Practices

In devising her method, Maria Montessori, had but one aim: to assist the child’s natural development, the end result, which is a self-sufficient, well adjusted adult. Any assistance we offer by definition must foster independence and self-sufficiency. Our Primary goal is to cultivate a child’s desire to learn and foster independence. Each child works at their own unique pace and we recognize and respect this. Some children enjoy working at a faster pace while others take their time. Acknowledging this important quality, we encourage each child to strive for their best in all aspects of their growth and development.

An important part of our curriculum is exercises in grace and courtesy. Not only do we nurture the individual child’s growth and development, but we also set guidelines for socially acceptable behaviour within the classroom. Gentle loving guidance is given in recognizing socially unacceptable behaviour within the classroom, as well as outside the classroom setting. As a result the child is exposed to plenty of opportunity to observe, learn, and implement socially desirable behaviours and learn it from their peers and teachers within the classroom. An important part of our class environment is showing courtesy and respect at all times.

A wide range of topics, themes and subjects are discussed throughout the year, and are incorporated with interesting field trips, guest speakers, and volunteer helpers making presentations and assisting with arts and crafts.

The enriched curriculum and environment at Little Star Montessori form a solid bedrock upon which the children acquire knowledge and develop social skills to last a lifetime.
